Acne treatments consist of a) reducing sebum production, b) removing dead skin cells, and c) killing bacteria with topical drugs and oral medications. It is very important to realize that acne might last for a long period and it is vital to be patient and always get medical advice from a dermatologist. Self care is also very critical during the treatment, focusing particularly on keeping the skin oil- free by gently washing the affected area(s) with warm water and a mild soap once or twice a day in order to remove dead skin cells and excess the oil. Acne treatment might be different for each case, depending upon whether the acne is mild, moderate, or severe.

In order to treat acne there are several acne treatment products which are divided in topical (applied to the skin) medications, prescribed for mild to severe acne and systemic (works internally) therapy which is needed to treat severe acne and may be used for moderate cases as well.

The most commonly used acne treatment products for topical therapy are benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid in the form of cream or gel.

In case of mild to severe acne, systemic therapy is usually the preferred method which may be combined together with topical medications. Acne treatment products for systemic therapy consist of antibiotics, hormone therapy and isotretinoin in severe cases.
